The slip is an unusal area on the track as it's a place where the sunlight actually reaches the ground in abundance.  It's one of the few areas with flowers like.  The forest floor does get patches of light but they aren't constant and shift through the day in response to the moving sun.  The open areas like shown here can get sun all day long (I was going to say "get sun all the time", but in with 270 days of rain a year, it's very frequently not sunny).  Eventually the open area will fill in with trees and become the deep, forested bush and then some other area will experience a landslide and the cycle will continue.
