This mobile is made of laser cut acrylic and is about ten feet
(three meters) wide with stainless steel fixtures. The motif of
this mobile was to have round pieces but instead of having a solid edge
like some of the other mobiles, the edges are all ragged. That's
a pretty broad specification but it seemed to work Each piece is
about 12" (30 cm) across. There are thirteen different colors
used and one pieces uses clear acrylic with various colors that were
left over from making the other thirteen pieces. The two
slideshows are broken up into "studio" (aka my drawing table) pictures
and pictures of the mobile assembled outdoors at my parent's lake
house. Not the best background but hey, it's pretty and that's
good enough.

Jig for gluing the multi-colored piece

You'll notice that the shadows can be a lot of
fun and in some cases as interesting as the pieces themselves including
when two pieces cast a shadow over the same section of ground.
The mobile is always rotating, turning, and moving. Even in the
middle of the night when the air is still, it's always alive.
It's nice how that works out. The picture of the person with the
shadow on her face is Mom. She is alright, that's for sure.
One other thing is there are two pictures of a
small jig that was made to assemble the multi-colored piece.
Acrylic cement can be messy and spending half an hour to make a jig to
glue it cleanly and accurately pays off. If you have to do
something many times, tooling can really pay off.
The pictures below link to videos of it turning
in the breezes. These videos aren't that great as this type of
mobile is actually kind of hard to photograph in the wooded
environment. It's hard to get above it and getting below it to
photograph it is hard to see against the trees. That and you
should always preview videos before you call it a day. Yeah, that's
pretty basic stuff but....
